Ribcev Laz

Mostnica Gorge
Ducking and hiding behind low walls we jumped in the Grand Kangoo and drove 5 minutes away to a small village for a walk up this gorge called Mostnica which is a local highlight.

We parked the car and started out on foot and pretty soon found the trail.  We headed along the river's edge, which fell below us about 10 metres, and where the water from the previous few days rain was rushing through the gorge.

Although the weather has been ordinary the last few days the upside of all the rain is that the waterfalls and rivers are pumping.

We lost the trail for a bit but I had a rudimentary tourist map and said that provided we stick to the river we couldn't help but end up at the falls so off we bumbled through the forest sometimes on a trail and at other times not.

Some waterfall up some valley
The trail was getting rougher and more ridiculous and I said to Nicki I can't see where we went wrong as we'd stuck to the river.  We decided to go on for another half an hour or so and if we didn't find it then we'd head back.  After a while we heard the roar of the water and tracked through some pretty heavy bush and found the waterfall.  Or at least 'a' waterfall.

Seems there was no viewing platform or road nearby and somehow we'd managed to be in the wrong spot.  It didn't matter much as the falls were nice and we had a picnic lunch nearby and the kids entertained themselves by throwing sticks into the water and watching them disappear over the falls.

Is this the way?
We backtracked after lunch and found our way back to the car.  After a 5 minute look at the map and the GPS in the car we discovered that the river had branched into 2 separate rivers and, not seeing the right hand one, we'd headed up the left hand one and into the wrong valley.

Started the car up and drove up the road to the correct waterfall in about 10 minutes flat and admired the falls we were meant to arrive at in the first place.

Mostnica Falls - finally!
Who cares, ours were better anyway, and judging by the terrain we'd scrambled over not too many people had been to see the falls we'd seen.

Under cover of darkness we scurried back to our lair all the while keeping a sharp eye out for our Slovenian nemesis.

Stray observations:  Waterfalls, they're trickier than you think.

Another waterfall in the valley.
